Week Beginning Monday 04.05.2020

Ongoing:

Please ensure you are still reading a minimum of 4 times a week. Spelling practise should also be ongoing. This includes your new Summer half termly spellings and your Big Spells. If you need a new list then please let me know.

Well done to those of you that have a go at the weekly Maths challenge. We are setting a new one for this week if you would like to have another go! This is an optional activity set at the beginning of the week which children are welcome to have a go at and share how they got on! The purpose of it is to keep you and your mathematician brain engaged and continue to build your problem solving skills.

For literacy this week we are setting a Pobble 365 comprehension activity called ‘The Mirror in the Attic’. The sheet can be found at the bottom of the page. Follow the instructions on the page to complete the activity.

Maths:

It’s Monday which is TTRS day! Spend at least 5 minutes on any of the games of your choice- feel free to rock out to music too!
This week we will be recapping addition and subtraction. As with last week, a range of activities has been set on Education City for you to complete. However the activities this week are non-sequenced which means you can choose which activities you want to complete at any time. The activity which has a pencil and two blue squares in the top right corner is an online worksheet. You do not have to print these, the answers can be written on a separate piece of paper. The activity with the pencil and the green tick in the top right corner contains the answers to the worksheet so you can check those afterwards.
If you complete these you are welcome to explore areas of learning on Education City or the MyMaths website. Alternatively, feel free to complete the weekly Maths challenge!

Topic/Science:

Watch the video on the Year 5 Home Learning page to discover how to make a terrarium. The only thing not mentioned in the video  is that your terrarium works best when sealed shut so be sure to put a lid on it or make one using an elastic band and cling film. Try to keep your terrarium out of direct sunlight too.

Over the week, create your own and take a picture or video! We would love to see what your terrarium looks like. Each day, make a note of what you observe looking into it. If you water well before closing it, you should notice something happen to the water over the course of the week. Think about what cycle you learnt about in Year 4 involving water..! You can write your notes down, take or draw pictures, take a video recording or do anything else to record what you can see happening inside the terrarium.

Yesterday you completed a comprehension sheet called ‘The Mirror in the Attic’. On the sheet was a story starter introducing the story. Continue on from this point of the story for two paragraphs. What do you think will happen next? Aspire to include as much description as possible! Use a range of imagery, similes, metaphors and personification in your writing.

Go through the Tenses powerpoint to recap what you have learnt about the past tense and the present perfect tense. Once you have completed this then head over to Education City and find the folder called ‘Tenses’ in the home work section. When there, you will see there are a few activities to choose from. The first is the learn screen which will talk you through tenses again if you want more support. The second is an activity you can complete or you can move on to the third activity. This is a worksheet you can complete similar to last week- you don’t need to print this if you don’t want to, you can complete the answers on a separate piece of paper. The fourth activity in the folder is the answers to the worksheet.

Based on what you have learnt the previous day, create something you can use to teach someone about past tense or present tense. This could be a poster, flash cards, sentence examples or anything else you can think of!

As it is a bank holiday, there is no obligation to complete any work on this day. However, if you are doing any extra activities at home (cooking, baking, walking, running, building, ect) then we would love to know! Feel free to keep in touch and share what you are getting up to on this long weekend.
