Spring 1
Christmas now seems to be a dim and distant memory lost in the fog of a grey January.
To lift our spirits in year 3, we have been busy being archaeologists exploring the
Stone Age. We have compared life in the Stone Age to our current daily life; made
models of Stonehenge and produced information sheets about this prehistoric monument.
In addition, we have racked our brains for exciting ways to trap a woolly mammoth
before recording these as clear instructions and making our own mammoth models.
In Maths, we have been mastering multiplication, specifically focusing on using our
2, 3, 4, 8 and 10 times tables to solve problems. We have been developing our reasoning
skills so that we can explain why and how we came to the answer.
At the start of this half term we finished off our winter tree collages and wrote
descriptions of winter settings. The daily run is proving very popular and we try
to get out as often as possible. In PE our main focus has been gymnastics, while
continuing to develop our games skills outside, weather permitting!
In ICT we have been using Scratch to try to make a simple maze game.
Spring 2
As Spring approaches we will be continuing our whirl- wind historical journey from
the Stone Age, through the Bronze and Iron Ages to the Roman occupation of Britain.
We will look at how everyday life has changed and what achievements each era has
contributed to our current lives. By looking at where our families have come from
we will explore the geography of the world – and will be able to identify key countries,
their capital cities and the continents they are in. As part of our Design and Technology
curriculum we will be making our own Celtic inspired breakfast cereals and packaging.
While in Art we will be using clay to make our own Celtic and Roman statuettes. To
top off our topic this half term we will be spending the day as Romano Britons on
our trip to ‘Hands on Heritage’.
In Maths, we will be applying our multiplication knowledge to help us understand
and use division facts, before going on to explore fractions. While in Literacy,
we will become roving reporters writing thought provoking newspaper articles about
the story of Red Riding Hood viewed from different characters’ perspectives, before
applying our reporting skills to reporting the Roman Invasion.
